Meet Your Conference Facilitators
Katie Bell EdD, RDH
Katie Bell joined Pacific University as a full-time faculty member in August 2010 in the School of Dental Hygiene Studies. She served as associate dean for Interprofessional Education from 2018 to 2023, and was appointed as the founding program director of the Doctor of Science Program in 2021. In 2022, Dr. Bell was appointed as the director of the School of Healthcare Administration and Leadership. She teaches students in the DMSc and DHSc programs. Dr. Bell has served in a variety of leadership roles at the university, including Faculty Senate Chair, Chair of the Interprofessional Education and Practice (IPEP) Committee, Chair of the Interprofessional Education Steering Committee (IPESC), Chair of the University Personnel Committee, and CHP faculty chair. Dr. Bell has taught many continuing education courses, both at Pacific University, and at local and national conferences. She has published widely on a variety of topics. Her research interests include interprofessional education, and issues in graduate and higher education.
Julie Sutton, RDH, MS
Julie Sutton is an Associate Professor at the UMKC School of Dentistry in the Division of Dental Hygiene. She has more than ten years of teaching experience, enjoys didactic and clinical teaching, and the application of learning through engagement. She has completed courses through the Association for Colleges and University Educators for effective instruction and inclusive teaching, and she found tremendous impact in the sessions she attended through the Faculty Scholars Program at UMKC. This led to her identification and reliance on her teaching philosophy in academia. Each learning opportunity can reflect philosophy and informs the learning culture. These can be the lasting impressions that result in teaching excellence. Professor Sutton is honored with three Distinguished Teaching Awards, and multiple lecturer of the year awards, and she served as the Faculty Fellow for Engaged Teaching and Learning to UMKC’s Center for Advancing Faculty Excellence. Her research interests include the scholarship of engagement in teaching and learning, access to care, social justice and humility in education- specifically the biologic sciences, epidemiology, and nicotine.
Rebecca L. Stolberg, RDH, MSDH
Rebecca Stolberg received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Dental Hygiene from Eastern Washington University; and a Master of Science Degree in Dental Hygiene Education from the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Dentistry. She has been in dental education for over 27 years. Prior to coming to ADEA Rebecca served many roles in academia including professor, program director, department chair, assistant dean, and associate dean. Rebecca became ADEA Senior Director of Allied Dental Education and Faculty Development July 2018, and was promoted to Vice President, Allied Dental Education and Faculty Development Dec. 2021. In this role she serves as staff liaison to the Council of Allied Dental Program Directors, manages three professional development programs, mentors new allied dental program directors, maintains relationships with external organizations and supervises two other staff. Her past and current work with ADEA, ADHA and Pew Foundation have earned her the reputation as a national consultant on dental hygiene curriculum as well as in leadership and mentoring.
Patrick RendĂłn, MD
Patrick RendĂłn is an academic hospitalist and associate professor in internal medicine at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine. He grew up in Albuquerque, New Mexico and attended UNM School of Medicine for his medical training. Dr.RendĂłn is the Assistant Clerkship Director of the Internal Medicine Clerkship, Director of the cardiovascular, pulmonary, renal, and gastrointestinal curricula in the first two years of medical school, and co-director of the UNM School of Medicine Phase I Curriculum Committee. His passions are clinical reasoning, improving the quality of medical education for trainees, and teaching others to teach.
Vuvi Nguyen, MS, PhD
Vuvi Nguyen is assistant professor in the Department of Diagnostic and Biomedical Sciences at the UTHealth School of Dentistry (UTSD) at Houston. She received her PhD in Biomedical Sciences from the University of North Texas Health Science Center (UNTHSC) in Fort Worth, with a concentration in Structural Anatomy and Rehabilitation Sciences. Currently Dr. Nguyen teaches in the dental hygiene program as director for the Oral Histology and Embryology course as well as a lecturer/ lab instructor for the Head and Neck Anatomy course. She also teaches in the dental school as the course director for the Neuroscience, Head and Neck Anatomy course, Human Biology course, and a faculty facilitator in the Clinical Applications II course. Dr. Nguyen is an active member of the American Dental Education Association (ADEA) and has served as the Secretary, Chair- Elect, and Chair in the Anatomical Sciences Section. Her current research interests involve developing innovative strategies to engage student learning. Her recent projects have included integrating the use Instagram to enhance anatomy learning and developing resources to promote student-centered collaborative learning in the classroom. Dr. Nguyen is a three-time recipient (2018, 2020, and 2024) of the John H. Freeman Award for Faculty Teaching. Chosen by first- and second-year dental students, the Freeman Award recognizes excellence in preclinical teaching.
